Types of Compression Garments for Lymphedema Therapy:

Compression garments play a crucial role in lymphedema therapy by applying consistent pressure to affected areas, helping to reduce swelling and improve circulation. Here are some common types of compression garments used for lymphedema management:

  • Compression Sleeves: These are worn on the arms to provide targeted compression and support.
  • Compression Stockings: These garments are designed for the legs and come in various lengths, including knee-high, thigh-high, and pantyhose styles.
  • Compression Bandages: These are often used in conjunction with compression garments to provide additional pressure and support, particularly for severe cases of lymphedema.
  • Compression Bras: Specifically designed for breast lymphedema, these garments provide compression and support to the chest area.
  • Custom-Fit Compression Garments: In some cases, custom-fit compression garments may be prescribed to ensure optimal fit and effectiveness for individual patients.

It’s essential for individuals with lymphedema to work closely with their healthcare providers to determine the most appropriate type and level of compression therapy needed. Additionally, proper care and maintenance of compression garments are important to ensure their longevity and effectiveness.

We can help you understand lymphedema care, compression therapy, and treatment options. We make sure you get exactly what you need and we are here to help every step of the way.

Compression Garments Are Now Covered By Medicare

The Lymphedema Treatment Act went into effect on January 1, 2024 and states coverage allowances as:

  • Custom and standard fit daytime garments – 3 sets (one garment for each affected body part) every six months
  • Custom and standard fit nighttime garments – 2 sets (one garment for each affected body part) every two years
  • Gradient compression wraps with straps
  • Bandaging supplies – limits determined based on the needs of the patient
  • Doffing and donning aids – limits determined based on the needs of the patient
  • Padding, linings, fillers, and zippers – limits determined based on the needs of the patient

The patient must have a prescription for the compression supplies and a diagnosis from their physician to qualify.

Coverage is not retroactive – garments and supplies purchased before January 1, 2024 will be covered.

For traditional Medicare – these supplies will be covered under Part B, so the annual Part B deductible and 20% coinsurance apply to all compression supplies.

All other insurance coverage including Medicare Advantage may require deductibles or copays (based on the plan) for DME items, including compression garments.

Please note: An HMO insurance plan will NOT cover compression garments.
